Trolling Planer

Trolling Planer

Planer boards can be a great way to increase your Walleye catch count.

Following these simple steps will allow you to set up and run these boards effectively when you are fishing for Walleye.

Planer boards will work well with boats both large and small.

Step 1: Determine The Size And Model Of Planer Boards To Be Used

The first thing to do is to determine what models and sizes of planer boards you will be using. There are models that range from one board to three, and they can come in widths that can be up to a foot wide for each board.

If there is more than one board or each board is six inches wide or bigger, the planer boards will run deeper unless the trolling speed is increased.

Planer boards should be running parallel to the boat while you are trolling, so choose the appropriate size and model to meet your needs.

The boards should not drag behind the boat because they lose effectiveness. Try to get the maximum spread with a distance from the boat of between seventy five feet and one hundred and twenty five feet.

Step 2: Attach The Planer Boards To The Boat

Once you have the proper size and model planer boards, the next step is to attach these boards to the boat and set them up properly.

Attach the running line for the planer board to the highest point of your boat, using planer board poles if you need to add height for this attachment.

Determine the number of lines you are going to troll, with a maximum of four unless otherwise restricted on the water you are fishing.

The line should be between one hundred and one hundred and fifty foot for each board, so that you can go out between seventy five feet and one hundred and twenty five feet.

Step 3: Attach The Fishing Rigs To The Line

When using boards, you want to target the top twenty five feet of the water column instead of trying to go deeper.

Let your trolling rig run out to the preferred distance, and then use a rubber band or Scotty clip to attach the trolling line to the running board line.

Once it is attached to the running line let out the reel line while leaving the clicker on.
Let the reel line out to a preferred distance on the running line, set the release on the reel, and then place the rod in the holder.

Make sure to set the lines from the outside in, so that the top lines will belong to the rods furthest out.

Follow this step for each line out, until you have the number of lines you want in the water.

After all the rods and boards are out, it is time to  enjoy the Walleye fishing. Planer boards can truly be a great way to catch more Walleye.
